Stinging Nettle (Urtica dioica)

Stinging nettle may be famous for its sting, but this nutrient-rich herb has a long history of use in herbal medicine.

Nettle leaves are naturally rich in vitamins, minerals, amino acids, fatty acids, and antioxidant polyphenols, making them a traditional choice as a nourishing herbal tonic.

Traditionally used for:

  • 🌿 Seasonal allergies – traditionally used to support the body during seasonal and environmental allergy symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose and itchy eyes.
  • 🌿 Prostate & urinary health – nettle root has a long history of use for supporting healthy prostate function and urinary comfort, particularly as men age.
  • 🌿 Nourishment & vitality – the mineral-rich leaves are traditionally used as a nutritive tonic to support overall wellness.
  • 🌿 Aches & discomfort – traditionally used to support comfortable muscles and joints.

Why does it sting?

Nettle gets its name from the Latin uro, meaning “to burn.” Tiny hollow hairs called trichomes cover the leaves and stems and can release irritating compounds when touched, causing that familiar sting, redness or itching.

Fortunately, once properly prepared, the sting is no longer an issue—and the plant's nutritional and herbal properties are ready to be enjoyed.

A little herbal history

Nettle has been used across Europe and Asia for centuries and now grows throughout much of the world. Almost every part of the plant has a place in herbal tradition, including the young leafy tops and roots.

At St. Francis Herb Farm, nettles are carefully harvested according to the part of the plant being used. The leafy tops are gathered while young and vibrant, while the roots are harvested when the plant's energy has moved below ground.

Fun fact: Nettle is so nutritious that it has traditionally been eaten as a cooked green. And yes, there's even an annual World Nettle Eating Championship in the UK where participants compete to eat raw nettles!
